Getting used to life with out you SUCKS. There is nothing good about you leaving me. I miss you more as each day passes. I'm having a really hard time right now. I miss Petey beyond words. While at work today, I cleaned up my email and found this poem in my save file. I sent it to my work email August 14, 2008. Three years to the exact day that my baby would die. I have no idea why I sent the poem to my work email. I'm guessing there are no accidents. It was meant to be there for me to read today.

When I am gone, Release me, Let me go-

We buried our friend on the land near the tipi. We wrapped him in his blankies and laid him to rest with his favorite toys. It was raining buckets which felt very fitting, because everyone was crying.

My beautiful Prince lost his battle with DCM at 12:55am today. He chose to leave us on the only night that all his boys were under the same roof, the first time in many months. Bobby and I were with him as he passed, and were able to call our kids in right after and we were all together as a family. My heart is broken into a million little pieces, our lives touched by this boy so special that none of us will ever be the same again. We are taking him up to the land to bury him, may he run free forever.

I will miss him....always........

The boys continue to be good buddies. It's been a wonderful time having two despite the crazy added work of monitoring two intact males. They have a nice relationship, and have a lot of fun together each day. I think Monty's laid back personality allows their relationship, if he was a typical Doberboy...it wouldn't have worked out past Monty's puberty. We still hike each day and Petey continues to love and enjoy his life. We are off to Maine in a week, I plan on spending all my time with Petey.

Epic Petey moment! For Fathers Day I picked up Lobsters. We were all sitting on the deck, talking while cooking dinner. The box of Lobsters was over by the lobster pot. All of a sudden we realize we hear loud crunching noises coming from the side of the picnic table. I ask mom to look at the dogs and see what they are chewing on. They were sharing....a live lobster! Too funny! Petey loves loves loves lobster. We are going to Maine in a couple of weeks so he will get his fill there for sure!

This lazy boy who spent his entire day sound asleep while at work, jumped in the lake tonight! The water temperature must be in the 40s. I think he saw a muskrat on the shore dive in so he decided to go after him. He was trying to swim across the lake, and with his bad heart I had to be the mean mom and make him get out. After he got out, he promptly tried to dig it's hole out. Every day I'm with him is fun, he never fails to put a smile on my face.

I am so enjoying getting out with my Boyz now 2 times each day. The temps are still down in the 30s & 40s but for some reason it just seems so much more comfortable out. Lots of birds out, so it makes for wonderful walks. I now keep both of them on Flexi's and they are doing great. They have learned to stop and wait while I look at birds and animals with the binocs. This morning a lil shite dog and his buddy came after my two monsters, and they didn't even try to hurt them! The lil shite dog even jumped on each of my boyz backs to hump them and they kept their teeth to themselves. I did tell the owner...she is lucky that Petey didn't try to kill her dog. Leashes and good recall are the first two rules of dog ownership, other wise you are being a irresponsible owner!

Pete's Holter results were much worse then I imagined. I know we are on borrowed time now. His heart could stop at any moment. I'm going to spend ever last second he has left at his side, paying attention to him, petting him, hugging him and kissing his beautiful face. The pain of knowing is unbearable right now. I'm working hard on getting back to a happy heart, so my boy doesn't have to spend the last bit of his life looking at my sorry puss, and licking my tears.

Peteys Holter showed a heart rate ranging from from 39-357 beats per minute with an average rate of 106 beats per minute. There were 3270 isolated ventricular premature complexes at a rate of 243 beats per minute. There were 358 couplets at 213 beats per minute. There were 163 runs of ventricular tachycardia, the longest run was 27 seconds at a rate of 415 beats per minute. There were 357 isolated atrial premature complexes at a rate of 223 beats per minute. There were 1748 runs of supraventricular tachycardia. The longest run was 4.6 minutes according to the narrative summary... ACTUAL TIME OF SVT WAS 2 HOURS, broken up by runs of ventricular tachycardia. There were pauses lasting longer than 2.0 seconds, the longest pause was 4.1 seconds.

3/1/11 DCM Mutated Gene Test

Last night Petey's results came in from his Dilated Cardiomyopathy Mutation Test it was NEGATIVE. I was shocked and saddened. Shocked because I really expected him to carry at least one copy of the gene. Sad for all my friends who were elated when their dogs came back Negative. About 15% of the dogs that have DCM are negative. I sent a blood draw, so it can be used to further their study, to hopefully find more genes that cause the disease. It would be nice to know that Petey helped other Dobermans avoid this awful early death sentence.

Holter results

Unfortunately my beautiful sweet Petes Holter results are not good. He is now on two new drugs to hopefully stop the arrhythmias he is now experiencing. Solalol and Mexiletine HCl 2x a day. Added to his 5 other drugs. I love this dog so much it doesn't seem possible that his heart is in such bad shape. One day at a time. He will have a blast for what ever time I get with him. I rented a house in Arcadia National Park Maine and another at Lake George, both on the water so he can swim and have a blast. Again...he breaks my heart.

Cardiologist

Friday February 11, 2011 We took the trip down to Tinton Falls to see Petey's cardiologist. We got an excellent report! Petey's Echo was very good. The overall size of his heart went down 20% and his SA/Ao went from 1.4(April) 1.9 (August) to 1.2! This was amazing news! His Cardiologist expects that Petey will see 2012! I'm THRILLED!

One year ago Petey was diagnosed with DCM. The year flew by and after I recovered from my shock and sadness over this fatal diagnosis, I have to admit....we had a fantastic year. I've enjoyed every moment with my big beautiful boy. He is simply the best dog I've ever shared my life with. One day at a time...be in the moment.

New Issue

During the early morning hours of Tuesday December 8, 2010 Petey had some sort of Neurological problem going on. He woke at 1:30am, I took him down stairs to bring him outside, and he ended up falling down the last couple of steps and then having his hind quarters going over with every step. He hung his head low starring at the floor and was afraid to walk for 7.5 hours straight. There was no comforting him. It was almost as if he didn't know I was there. By morning he was finally able to lay down but only with his body straight and head between his paws. He seemed to have severe vertigo. I took him to the vet, and he was able to see the behavior. He had never seen anything like it. He said it almost looked like he was about to seize and then it stopped. He gave him a shot of steroids. He said it looked like Wobblers Syndrome, or a spine injury. I did play tug with him Tuesday afternoon, and Petey and Monty play very rough every day. A spine injury is very possible. We are going to take it one day at a time. Petey is acting as though he has some pain, he shakes and won't play with Monty.

Saturday I did get him out for a nice leisurely walk at Turtle Point Road, it was sunny and 40 degrees, gorgeous! Both of us needed the fresh air. He came alive and all his issues disappeared and he was very happy to be outside in the sunshine. I love watching him have fun. I need to let him continue to life his life.

Petey & the Tipi

Petey becomes a different dog the second he goes to the property and near our Tipi. We aren't sure what happens to him, but he becomes very wild and crazy. Yesterday we had some work to do in the Tipi and took Petey alone (with out Monty) to give him some quality time. He raced around and did insane zoomies every time I walked outside the Tipi, he wildly barked at and attacked Brad because he was laying down doing while working on the flap, went across the freezing cold river after scenting an old deer gut pile, proceeded to eat it, played serious tug with his blanket as I tried to bring it in the Tipi so I could wrap up his shivering body after his swim, then upon getting it, dragged outside to suck on it, and just acted completely wild and crazy for the entire two hours. We had to laugh, it's almost as if he becomes wolf like.

The Scary Balloon 12/2/10

Today soon after I let Petey out for his crack of dawn ritual, I heard very scary barking. Alarm barking. I listened for a bit thinking there may be an animal in the side yard. I called him, and he refused to come, so I headed out in the dark with a flashlight. He was on the edge of the yard holding something at bay....I shinned the flashlight having no idea what to expect, YIKES a helium balloon was caught in the bushes, blowing in the wind and catching a tiny bit of light from the neighbors spotlight, throwing a reflection. Petey upon seeing that it was only balloon, which he has lots of experience with, started doing zoomies like a wild man through the yard, trying to act like nothing happened. He was completely embarrassed. I tried my best not to laugh, he was so adorable it was very hard. I captured the monster and brought it in the house for him to properly kill it. This is just one of the many reason's that I love this dog so much, he makes me laugh every single day!

Thanksgiving in VT

We rented a big house in Killington VT for Thanksgiving week. We rented the same house last year. All my sons came,lots of their friends and my mom. Both dogs had a blast. There is nothing like being able to take your dog with you on vacation. You can have a great time and not worry if your furchild is being properly taken care of. The boyz were very good in the house. We took the top apartment of the house, it was really nice to have our own living room and kitchen. Monty was up pretty early most days, not earlier then 7am. We found a wonderful place to hike, only minutes from the house. I hope we are able to go again next year. Thanksgiving is my favorite holiday.

What a life

I've had dogs in my life since birth. They have always been treated well,lived as members of our family. All of my own personal dogs have been what others consider spoiled, I've never considered any of them spoiled, its the least I could do for their wonderful companionship. It wasn't until my Petey's diagnosis with Dialated Cardiomyopathy that I began to question what constitutes a true quality life for my canine companions. It is a question that everyone who has a dog should be asking themselves. It is up to you to give them the best life possible. Unless there is a miracle Petey will not grow old. It is up to me to fill his days with great experiences that make what ever time he has left, wonderful. I also need to make sure he has a great life for my own good too. I don't want to lose him and have any regrets that I should have, could have. In all honesty, each of us only has today. We have no guarantees that there will be a tomorrow. Knowing that Petey is sick has made me look at his days and ask myself...what else does he need? What would make this day more special? We miss very few opportunities to get outside and hike, because that is what Petey seems to love best. Most days we change the trails we go on, so that there is more variety, more to see and smell. I feed raw, and love to give him new meats, bones, and raw treats. Every time I have an errand to run, I bring him with me. When I book a vacation, we get houses that dogs are allowed, and while there, find hiking trails to explore each day. He has comfortable beds and baskets full of all kinds of toys. The best change that I've made in Petey's life is taking him to work with me. He loves it. On work days he immediately knows we are going. He sees me ready his bag and water and his excitement builds. Once in work, he immediately wants to go out of the office building and into our garage to get one of his Pig Ear treats. I unlock the garage, Petey runs in, goes up the stairs, rummages through the box, pulls out an ear, runs back down the stairs and heads back to the office. He settles on his bed and eats his treat. After finishing, he spends most of his day sleeping, only getting up to greet different people who come in the office just to say hello to him. I love looking down and seeing him laying next to me. I saves me from worrying about him. It is amazing how much more relaxed Petey is all the time now that I rarely leave him. Being a Doberman, his life work is to be the constant companion to a human, to protect them. He takes his job seriously and wants to be with me 24/7 no matter where I go or what I am doing. Although knowing about his disease has been heartbreaking for me, I am happy that I have a chance to make his life incredible and at the same time....enjoy my own life so much more. My puppy Monty has really benefited, every day is a new adventure for him. New smells, tastes, experiences and lots of fun!

There is nothing like having the companionship of your beloved dog spend work days with you. I love taking Petey with me. Days fly by and I enjoy every moment of my day. Petey has friends at work. Both sets of tenants come down and get Petey, bring him upstairs and give him treats. He also has a big box of Pigs ears out in the construction garage. The first time Petey and I went out there to look where his daddy had stashed to box, Petey found the ears. They were up on the second floor, no one had showed Petey were they were, but he easily found them. Dobe's have amazing noses. Now we have a routine, shortly after I arrive at work I get the key to the garage, and I only have to stand at the door way while Petey runs in, up the stairs, opens the box and comes running back down with his ear. His intelligence blows me away everyday.

The Dead Fish

Petey ran along the shore with his nose in the air, and looking out in the lake. He jumped in the water and swam out a bit and finds a very old ripe dead fish! He proceeds to swim into shore and gulp the rotten disgusting fish down in two bites....ugh. Petey's form of Sushi!

Most hikes Petey never misses an opportunity to jump in the water and cool down. I am grateful we live where there is lots of water. He enjoys this part of his outings, and I never have to bathe him. Swimming daily is a win win situation.

So hard to get good pictures of the Boyz hiking. They are always in constant motion, running and enjoying every moment they are outside in Nature. I never tire of watching them run and track all the great scents they find.

Its been quite a few months since I hike up to the top of the park to see the view of Greenwood Lake. I have been afraid to have Petey hike too far during the warm weather. I'm glad that we went. He seemed to have a blast, and it was the first time Monty had been up there with us. Gorgeous Day out temps only in the 60s. Perfect hiking weather.

Party Boyz

We threw our oldest son a college graduation party. We rented a tent, cooked gormet food, hired a couple of waitress's and had a blast. 75 people attended, including about 20 of our sons friends from college. They all spent the night. Both of my dogs were outstanding, they acted like true ambassadors for the breed. Petey has helped everyone he has ever met view Dobermans differently then they all remember. His temperament is sounder then any other dog I've spent time with. I love him deeply.

Cardiologist Visit 8/11/10

Petey had his visit with the Cardiologist. According to his Echo, his disease is progressing quite quickly. He was now put on Pimobenden. His Holter came back good, less then 30 total VPCs all singles. We don't have to go back to the Doctor for six months. I'm happy that although the disease is now on the other side of his heart, over all the heart is handling the changes very well.

Lake George Vacation

We rented a gorgeous home in Lake George for a week. The dogs were able to come too. I had a nice time, we found a beautiful nature area for hiking. Petey had lots of fun.
